The Cold War During the 1950s

The Korean War:

  After World War II, Korea was divided into two nations by the U.S and the Ssoviet Union, a captalist South and a communist North. On June 25, 1950, the North Korean forces invaded the South across the 38th parallel in order to reclaim it. 

McArthurs Counterattack

Mcarthur launchd a counter attack, with tanks, heavy artilery and fresh troops from the U.S.. McArthur set troops behind the enemy lines and others nroth from pusan. McArthur's plan saved his army from a very likely defeat. The U.N army chased north korean soliders back to the 38th paallel, making it seem as if korea would reunite agian. 

The Chinese Fight Back

  In 1950, about 300,000 soliders joined the North Korea side for fear of the U.S attacking them. The Chinese wanted to use North Korea as a buffer state they wanted them to protect their lands. The fight between North Korea and South korea worsened with thier main allies being the U.S and China. In januraray 1951 all UN and South Korean troops had been pushed out of North Korea. They foought violently for two years but none of the sides could advance. Mcarthur then recomands to attack China in 1951. Mcarthur requested to use an atomic bomb on China to blow up Chinese cities. However, president Truman rejected McArthurs request. The Soviet Union had a pact wtih China and attacling China could start World War III. Instead the U.N and South Korea moved back up to the 38th Paralle. 

Truman Vs. McArthur

McArthur urged a full scale war against China. however,  Truman was afraid it would start World War III, refused to declare war on China. McArthur dispsed Trumans plans and spoke out privately on the newspaper against president Truman.

In 1951 Truman Fired McArthur because of his resistence to follwo the rules.

 

Fear of Communism

As the war grew the fear of Communism also grew. In the early 1950s attacks on suspected communist was called McArthurism. By 1953 about 39 states passed laws making it illegal to adovcate the violent overthrow of the government. 

The H-Bomb

During the Cold War an atomic bomb more destructive then the atom bomb was being created. It was called the Soviet Union and In 1951 the U.S. and the Soviet union would enter a race to see who could create it first. 

Policy of Bankmanship

Dwight D. Eisenhower was oresident by the time the Soviet Union and the U.S had an H-bomb. The willingness for the president to go to war was known as bankmanship. 

The Space Race

The Soviet Union and the U.S begin to raceto space. On Octobar 4, 1957, the Soviets launched the Sputnik, which was a settleite that travled arund in space. This Shocked Americans and on janurary 31, 1959, americans finnaly luanched they're own setlite into space. 

Settling for Stalement

On june 23, 1951 the Soveit Union requested a cieze fire. Noegioaters took a year to discuss the situation about the war prisoner. Finally, the war eneded in 1953 with a signing of an armistice. Howver, North Korea were still communists. In additon North and South Korea were still divided into two different countries. 

The Warsaw Pact

The warsaw pact was a milliatry alliance from the Soviet Union with seven eastern European contries. The Soviet Union did this in fear of them becoming allies with the NATO
